Sporulation of Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum.

Good sporulation was induced in batch culture using carbon sources that have in common the effect of reducing growth rate.

Inhibition of sporulation of Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum.

Studies were undertaken to determine the effect of chemical inhibitors on the sporulation of thermophilic anaerobes of which Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum is a representative organism. Since fluoroacetic acid (R. S. Hanson, Ph.D. Thesis, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana, 1962), diethyl malonate (6), and a-picolinic acid (pyridine-6-carboxylic acid; reference 3) have been found to inhibit the sporu...

Sporulation of the "thermophilic anaerobes".

A reasonable degree of synchrony in the sporulation of Clostridium thermosaccharolyticum 3814 was obtained by using three 10% transfers of 8-hr cultures in a medium containing 0.5% L-arabinose, 0.5% peptone, 0.5% yeast extract, and Gc minerals. Sporulation was stimulated by L-arabinose and L-xylose, but was repressed by glucose, mannose, fructose, and D-pentoses. Sporulating cells were long and...

Sporulation of Bacillus subtilis in continuous culture.

Sporulation of Bacillus subtilis 168 was studied in chemostat cultures. Sporulation occurred at high frequency under limitation of growth by glucose or the nitrogen source in minimal medium, whereas rates of sporulation were low for Mg(2+), phosphate, citrate, or tryptophan limitation. Sporulation was found at all growth rates tested, and the incidence of spores increased with decrease in growt...
